Larry E. Overman

Larry Eugene Overman ( born 1943 in Chicago, Illinois ) is a professor of chemistry at the University of California, Irvine.

In 1965 he received the B. A. Degree from Earlham College and in 1969 he received his doctorate at the University of Wisconsin -Madison for Ph. D. in chemistry. After postdoctoral work at Columbia University with Ronald Breslow he moved to the University of California, where he is a full professor today.

Larry Overman is a member of the United States National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 2003, his work was honored with the Arthur C. Cope Award.

Overman's research interests include the development of new chemical reactions with a focus on transition metal -catalyzed syntheses of organic natural products. He is particularly associated with the Overman rearrangement and Claisen rearrangements of allylic alcohols for the synthesis of allylic trichloroacetimidates.
