Larry Murphy (ice hockey)

Lawrence Thomas Murphy ( born March 8, 1961 in Scarborough, Ontario ) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player who during his playing career 1980-2001 for the Los Angeles Kings, Washington Capitals, Minnesota North Stars, Pittsburgh Penguins, Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings played in the National Hockey League.

Career

After two years in the Ontario Hockey League with the Peterborough Petes Larry Murphy was selected in the first round in overall fourth of the Los Angeles Kings during the NHL Entry Draft in 1980. In his rookie season 1980/81 he set up two still existing NHL record for rookie defenseman with 60 assists and 76 points scorer. During his 21 years in the National Hockey League he graduated in 1615 games in the regular season. After his career in late 2001 which was also a record, but this was surpassed during the 2003/04 season. Twice he won with the Pittsburgh Penguins (1991 and 1992) and twice with the Detroit Red Wings (1997 and 1998), the Stanley Cup. 2004 Links shooter was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. He scored 1216 points in his career, and is therefore still the fourth best defenders of all time.
