Larry Rivers

Larry Rivers (* as Yitzhok Loiza Grossberg on August 17, 1923 in New York City; † August 14, 2002 ) was an American musician and artist. He is considered one of the founding fathers of Pop Art

Life

Rivers was born in the Bronx as Yitzhok Loiza Grossberg. As a jazz saxophonist he joined from 1940 to 1945 in New York City and took in that time his stage name to Larry Rivers. He studied at the Juilliard School of Music in 1945 until 1946.

His interest in painting awoke, 1945. He studied from 1947 to 1948 at the Hans Hofmann School and then from 1949 to 1951 at New York University, where he was a pupil of William Baziotes.

Rivers was married since 1945 with Augusta Berger, with whom he had the natural son Steven and the adopted child Joseph. After the divorce from Augusta married Clarice Rivers 1961 Price. From this marriage two daughters Emma and Gwene emerged. This marriage ended in divorce in 1967. His later life companion was the painter Daria Deshuk, with whom he had his son Sam Deshuk Rivers. Work
