Larry Thrasher

Larry Thrasher ( b. 1959 ) is an American musician, of the elements of Industrial, Noise, Ambient and World Music combines. He is known primarily for his qawwali group Thrasher Qawwal 1987 to 1997 and his work with Genesis P -Orridge since 1994 in its projects Psychic TV and Thee Majesty.

Biography

Thrasher grew up in Kentucky and has learned piano as a child and guitar. Already in the 1970s, he studied classical guitar. After graduating he worked briefly at an Australian punk band called Heroes, then he came to Los Angeles and turned to the percussion, where he showed himself particularly influenced oriental. His first publication was Thrasher with the noise band Big bar in 1984, he recorded four albums with the short time.

These early publications were distributed by the label Silent Records, first as a cassette, and later as LPs. Silent Rec was founded by musicians Kim Cascone. In its sequel, The Thessalonians Thrasher was involved as one of two percussionists in addition to three keyboardists and a guitarist. The Thessalonians have attained cult status in San Francisco and published plates on Silent Records; the label has now developed into a major independent label, was sold by founder Cascone but 1996.

Thrasher has studied in India from 1986 Classical Indian music and tabla with Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri at the Ali Akbar College of Music and in 1987 founded the qawwali group Thrasher Qawwal, which existed until 1997. Despite only a few publications the band as one of the very few Western qawwali groups of their time had an outstanding reputation. Thrasher occurs in this context, under the stage name Babalarrji.

From 1993 onwards, Larry Thrasher worked for about ten years with Genesis P-Orridge after his emigration to the United States. Alone to 1997 originated in rapid succession a dozen albums, some of which only mastered by Thrasher, had been partly designed completely musical. The albums published according to the origin of their creation under different group names: Psychic TV, Splinter Test or Genesis P-Orridge & Larry Thrasher. Thrashers contributions are diverse, ranging from percussion on ambient soundscapes to complete electronic arrangements and sound control room of the albums. In 1999, he appeared at the farewell concert of Psychic TV in London and on the published 2007 studio album Hell is Invisible ... the to the Thrasher does not count as PTV3 reformed Psychic TV, which was recorded in the spring of 2006 by the former Tour occupation, he is as guest musicians called in several pieces.

As of 1998, formed Thrasher with P -Orridge and guitarist Bryin Dall the group Thee Majesty, for the first time in October 1998 occurred in Stockholm and he formally belongs today, although ostensibly for financial reasons since 2004 no longer with performances by the group, he in appearance entered and is now represented by Eddie O'Dowd.

Thrasher is involved in numerous other projects, for example on the acid jazz band Om Boys and the minimum noise project XX. His latest project is called Poo Poo Shoe and had on 20 January 2007 in Oakland his stage debut.
