Lars Bo

Lars Bo ( * May 29, 1924 when Lars Bo Jørgensen in Kolding, † October 21, 1999 in Paris) was a Danish artist and author. Lars Bo is known for graphic works inspired by Surrealism with fantastic designs.

Life and work

Lars Bo worked with the painter P. Rostrup Boyesen at the State Museum of Art Copenhagen from 1939 to 1940 and from 1941 to 1943 attended the School of Applied Arts ( Kunsthåndværkerskolen ) Copenhagen. During this time he began to get involved in the resistance movement against the German occupation and was in the last year of the war a member of the resistance group Odense.

After the war, he traveled once criss-crossing Europe and then settled in Paris. There he worked as an artist and book illustrator. He was friends with the engraver Albert Flacon and with Johnny Friedlaender, one of the pioneers of modern color etching, which operated in Paris, a graphic design studio; there emerged his first etchings.

Bo was known for his color etchings, of which emerged after 1959, more than 400, which could be seen in most European countries, America, Japan and Hong Kong in exhibitions. His paintings are in numerous private collections and museums. Inspired by the Scottish landscape was created in 1983 and 1964, a series of etchings, which brought him international recognition. Bo wrote books and illustrated editions of fairy tales Hans Christian Andersen; for the design of the fairy tale The Snow Queen 1969, he was honored with a gold medal in Bratislava; his edition of The hiking companion appeared in 1983 in German translation. In 1977, he received in France the " first Prix ​​de la Critique " and in 1983 by the city of Paris an honorary residence. Pierre Lübeck ruled in an article in the Danish newspaper Politiken that its graphics anspreche the imagination, " because the world she holds, is so varied and because what happens in it can not be predicted ."
