Las Animas County, Colorado

Las Animas County (short: Las Animas ) is a county located in the state of Colorado of the United States. In 2000, the population was 15,207 inhabitants. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Trinidad.

Geography

The County is one of the least populated counties in Colorado. About 60 percent of the population lives in Trinidad ( with about 9,000 inhabitants). The other towns have fewer than 1,000 inhabitants

The county is named after the Las Animas River, whose former Spanish name El Rio de los Animas Perdidas en Purgatorio: River of Lost Souls of Purgatory.

By County leads the Interstate highway 25 in the ghost town of Ludlow Ludlow is the monument dedicated to the Ludlow massacre in April 1914. At that time, about 1,200 miners went on strike the former mining town of Ludlow. 25 people, including women and children, were killed in the use of the National Guard of Colorado.
