Las Campanas Observatory
The Las Campanas Observatory - ( LCO ) is an astronomical observatory owned and run by the Carnegie Institution for Science. It is located near La Serena in Chile. The site was chosen because of its weather -order for the observatory: it is mostly above the clouds and offers 300 cloud-free days per year of studying the skies.
The observatory houses a number of telescopes. The main instruments are the two Magellan telescopes with 6.5 m diameter mirror. In addition, there is the " Irenee du Pont " with 2.5 m diameter mirror and the " Henrietta Swope " with 1.0 meters, named after Irenee du Pont and Henrietta Hill Swope. The latter is characterized by a large angle of 2 °, which is obtained through a particular Ritchey -Chrétien configuration with a relatively large 25 cm secondary mirror and a Gascoigne corrector.
The Irenee du Pont can be operated with the following instruments:
- Direct CCD Camera
- Wide Field IR Camera
- Wide Field Reimaging CCD Camera
- Echelle Spectrograph
- ModSpec, a spectrograph, which can also be used at the Henrietta Swope telescope.
For the Henrietta Swope Telescope, the following instruments are available:
- Direct CCD Camera
- HgCdTe infrared camera
- ModSpec Slit Spectrograph
Also located on the premises nor the 1.3m Warsaw University Telescope and a 13- inch refractor.
