Laser detuning

As depression (English detuning ) is in a state of laser spectroscopy of a laser with respect to the particles to be measured (atoms, ions or molecules) called, in which the frequency of the laser light is not resonant with an atomic transition between two energy levels of the particles. Colloquially called this condition " The laser is detuned ".

Mathematically defined the detuning of the difference between the two angular frequencies:

Wherein the angular frequency of the atomic transition, and the angular frequency of the laser light or the energy difference between the two energy levels, the energy of a photon of the laser and the reduced effect of the quantum. Three cases must be distinguished:

  • - Rotverstimmung
  • - Resonance, no detuning
  • - Blue detuning

The names of red and blue detuning are derived from the electromagnetic spectrum. Red light has a lower frequency than blue light. This does not mean that detuned laser light has one of these colors, but merely indicates the direction in which the spectrum, the frequency of the light is shifted.

The detuning has among other things a great influence on Rabi oscillations. It plays a role in laser cooling.

The detuning is an important element of modern spectroscopic methods and is therefore treated in many textbooks in the relevant fields of application.
