Lassen County, California

Lassen County is a building under the northeast of the U.S. state of California County. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Susanville.

History

Lassen County was formed in 1864 from parts of Plumas County and the Shasta County. The name of the county goes back to Mount Lassen Peak, named for Peter Lassen, one of General John C. Fremont 's guides and a famous trapper. He was killed in 1859 by the Paiute Indians at the foot of the mountain.

According to the census of 2000, there were 33 828 people in Lassen County. There were 9,625 households and 6,776 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 80.81 % White, 8.84 % African American, 3.26 % Native American, 0.74 % Asian, 0.43 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 3.23% from other races groups; 2.69% were descended from two or more races. 13.84 % of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 9,625 households out of which 35.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.80 % were married couples living together, 10.30% had a female householder with no husband. 29.60% were non-families. 24.50 % of all households and 9.20 % had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.08.

Based on the county the population was spread out with 21.80 % under the age of 18, 10.80 % from 18 to 24, 36.90 % from 25 to 44 years, 21.40% between 45 and 64 years and 9.00% were 65 years old or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 168.80 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 192.20 males.

The median income for a household was $ 36,310, and the median income for a family was $ 43,398. Males had a median income of $ 37,333, women $ 26,561. The per capita income was $ 14,749. 14.00% percent of the population and 11.10% of families are below the poverty line. 16.10% of those under age 18 and 7.80% were 65 years or older.
