László Fejes Tóth

László Fejes Tóth ( born March 12, 1915 in Szeged, † 17 March 2005 in Budapest) was a Hungarian mathematician.

Life

László Tóth is known for his work in the field of convex geometry and the finite sphere packings. In 1953 he was able to provide an important basis for the proof of Kepler 's conjecture in a work by he attributed the problem to a complicated calculation. He also predicted that the proof can probably be done only with computers. This proved to be true, than later Thomas Hales presented a computer-assisted proof. In addition, he set up the sausage conjecture. Law known was his alternative Honeycomb, which would save compared to the real far less than one per thousand of the wax. Its honeycomb conjecture was proved by Thomas Hales, of doing similar methods as used in the proof of the Kepler conjecture. There he followed a path that already Fejes Tóth had itself proposed for the solution of this conjecture.

Tóth was a professor in Budapest at the Alfred Renyi Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, which he headed from 1970 to 1982 after the death of Renyi. 1960/61, he was a visiting professor at the Albert -Ludwigs- University of Freiburg and 1963/64, at the University of Wisconsin. László Fejes Tóth is the father of the well -known mathematician Gábor Fejes Tóth.

László Tóth was a corresponding member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences and a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
