Latch (hardware)

A bolt is a displaceable or rotatable member which can be brought into a form-fitting and releasable connection with a counterpart. In its main application it serves as a fitting for locking ( and unlocking ) of doors, windows and covers.

The form-fitting acts transversely to the shift or rotation of the bolt. In the extension of the bolt to lock the shift or rotation is prevented form-fitting, it is locked or unlocked with a key. A attached to the sliding bolt of a door padlock makes this development step clearly.
