Laterina

Laterina is a municipality with 3516 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Arezzo, in Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The municipality covers about 24 km ². It is located about 14 km northwest of Arezzo and 50 km southeast of Florence on the Arno in the climatic classification of Italian communities in the zone D, GR 2000 / G.

The districts include Casa Nuova (248 meters altitude, about 120 inhabitants) and Ponticino (255 meters altitude, about 1500 inhabitants, in part suburb of Pergine Valdarno).

The neighboring municipalities are Arezzo, Castiglion Fibocchi, Civitella in Val di Chiana, Pergine Valdarno and Terra Bracciolini.

History

The name derives from the Latin and later Lateris (English brick) and to this day the place with the brick kiln is closely connected. The development of the town began around the 11th century, important as it was, however, only in 1272, when the Ghibelline Arezzo wanted to protect themselves from the expansion of the Guelf Florence and built a castle in Laterina. This was taken siege of Florence in 1288 after eight days. Ten years later at the same place was the Rocca, this time built by the Florentines and more attached, but again short-lived: The Ubertini conquered the place in 1304 for the Aretines back.   • Guinigi Tower, Tower of the medieval fortifications and western city gate.
  • Villa di Monsoglio, former hospital, was remodeled in the late 17th century by the family Peruzzi to the villa.

Traditions

  • Palio della Rana, a kind Tauziehwettbewerb, takes place every last Sunday of June in the district Ponticino. The origins date back to the 18th century.
