Latham & Watkins [ ˌ leɪθəm ‿ ‿ ən wɒtkɪnz ], only Latham is a global law firm in the legal form of a limited liability partnership, which offers with more than 2,100 lawyers in 32 offices Legal advice in all areas of business law. In Germany Latham & Watkins is represented at four sites in Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg and Munich, with currently 170 certified professionals. In 2011, the law firm in Germany achieved a turnover of 93 million euros.

History

Dana Latham and Paul Watkins Latham & Watkins founded in January 1934 in Los Angeles. Latham specialized in tax law and was later Commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service under President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Watkins was mainly active in the labor law. Although the firm started with these priorities, it developed into an international so-called full-service law firm edited the prestigious mandates in the areas of mergers & acquisitions, litigation and public commercial law.

In the beginning, the law firm of three lawyers. It grew slowly at first, with 19 lawyers in 1960 and 46 in 1970.

The first office opened in Germany Latham & Watkins in the wake of the merger with the Hamburg firm Schön Nolte in 2001. During the same year a branch followed in Frankfurt. In 2005, the office was opened in Munich. First, the firm operated under the name Latham & Watkins Schön Nolte, later with Latham & Watkins.

In 2008, the profits of the partners declined by 20.5%. Therefore, Latham & Watkins dismissed in February 2009 190 lawyers and 250 other employees, which until then the largest mass dismissal of a U.S. law firm war.2009 sales declined by 5 %, but profits increased because of layoffs by the same amount.
