Lathosterol-Oxidase

The lathosterol oxidase, the enzyme in eukaryotes, catalyzes the dehydration of sterols in the 5- position. The reaction step is a part of the cholesterol biosynthesis. The transmembrane protein is localized at the endoplasmatic reticulum. In humans, mutations in the gene SC5DL the cause of the rare hereditary disease Lathosterolose.

Catalyzed reaction

O2 NADPH / H ⇒ 2 H2O NADP

Lathosterol is dehydrogenated to 7- dehydrocholesterol.
