Latin Union

The Latin Union is an organization of different States where Romance languages ​​are spoken. Your goal is to promote the general heritage and the different identities of the Latin language in the whole Latin world and maintain it.

The organization was founded in 1954 in Madrid, Spain, in the form of a constituent agreement. As a functioning institution, it exists since 1983., The seat of the Latin Union is located in Paris, France.

Since the establishment of this international organization, the number of Member States has increased from 12 to 35, and the members can be found now in all parts of the world.

The official name of the Latin Union in Spanish Unión Latina, latine in French Union Unione Latina in Italian, União Latina in Portuguese, Uniunea Latina in Romanian and Unio Llatina in Catalan.

Objectives

The requirements of the Latin Union membership are as follows:

Language requirements

  • The official language must be derived from a Latin language.
  • The language of education must be from a Latin language.
  • The language of the mass media and daily life comes from the Latin.

Linguistic-cultural criteria

  • Existence of significant literature in a Romance language.
  • Press and Publishing in a Romance language.
  • Television with strong Romanesque influence.
  • Radio broadcasts with Romansh shipments.
  • Cultural training of Roman languages.
  • Cooperation with other Romance-speaking countries.
  • Social organization, based on the respect of fundamental freedoms of human rights, democracy, tolerance and religion.

The Latin Union currently has members from five continents. (The list corresponds to the Romance languages ​​of the respective countries. )

The official languages ​​of the Latin Union are Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian and Catalan. The first four are used as working languages. All texts are translated into four languages.

The Latin Union symbol contains the Catalan name ( Unio Llatina ), since Andorra is a member state, as Catalan is the sole official language.

Closure of the General Secretariat

At an extraordinary meeting of the Congress of the Latin Union on January 26, 2012 it was decided by the General Secretariat of the Organization 31 July 2012 to close completely and lay off staff. This is due to the miserable financial situation of the organization, caused by membership fees. At the next session of the Congress of the Latin Union, a new Secretary-General should be selected and the tasks to be redefined.
