The Latrobe River ( also: La Trobe River) is a river in Gippsland in Victoria, Australia. It rises in the area between Powell Town and Noojee where he met with the Little Yarra River, a tributary of the Yarra River, shares its catchment area. Afterwards, he takes some tributaries of the southern slopes of the Baw Baw plateau, a part of the Australian Alps, on. The Latrobe River first flows in an easterly direction, then south and finally east again through the Latrobe Valley into Lake Wellington, one of the Gippsland Lakes. Its tributaries include the Moe River, which Tanjil River and the Tyers River.

The Lake Narracan is a reservoir in the course of the river near Newborough, which was built for the cooling water supply of the nearby lignite-fired power plants.

Origin of the name

The river was opened in 1841, named by WA Brodribb after Charles La Trobe, the first lieutenant-governor of the Port Phillip District.
