Macron (Aa Ee Uu ïî )
For all vowels except the O it is the macron, which denotes a long pronunciation of the vowel. In contrast, all vowels are pronounced without macron short. Especially for German ears that is often unfamiliar. Example: the nominative of Riga, the a is pronounced short, unlike the locative: Riga ( German meaning: in Riga). Here, both vowels are long.
The O exists of the debate here in three variants: short, long, or as a diphthong [ uo ], which are all represented by the same letter.
Hatchek

The debate is:
- č as ch
- š as sch
- ž such as Journal
