Latvian parliamentary election, 1993

The Latvian parliamentary election in 1993 was held on 5 and 6 June 1993. It was the election of the 5th Saeima of the Republic of Latvia and the first election after the restoration of independence of Latvia.

Electoral system

It seats 100 were determined in the Latvian Parliament on the basis of the law on the election of the 5th Saeima on 20 October 1992. In contrast to the pre-war elections, a four -percent electoral threshold wurede introduced and lowered the voting age from 21 to 18 years. Was selected by proportional representation. The approximately 700,000 Russians living in the country were not entitled to vote for election.

From 23 lists attracted 8 in the Saeima one. The other failed due to the four- percent threshold.
