Lauca River

The Río Lauca rises on Chilean territory in the swamps of Parinacota and is thus supplied with water from Lake Chungará, Cotacotani, and La Cueva. After 76 km on Chilean territory, where it absorbs water from the rivers Blanco, Portales and Guayatire, it flows in Macaya (18 ° 35 ' S, 69 ° 5' W) in the Bolivian territory. The Río Lauca flows into the Salar de Coipasa, the second largest salt lake in Bolivia. This is at 3680 m altitude in the Andes.

In 1949, a border dispute: 62 about the water rights on the Rio Lauca between Bolivia and Chile. 1975 new negotiations started, but stopped again in 1978.
