Lauco

Lauco ( Friulian: Lauc ) is a municipality with 760 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012) in the province of Udine in the Italian region Friuli- Venezia Giulia.

Geography

Location

The municipal area is approximately 719 meters above sea level on a 35 km2 plateau, which is formed by a southern slopes of the mountain Arvenis and drops steeply to the Tagliamento Valley. Adjacent communities are Ovaro, Raveo, Sutrio, Tolmezzo, Villa Santina and Zuglio.

Districts of Lauco are Allegnidis ( Dalenies ) Avaglio ( Davai ) Buttea ( butée ) Trava ( Travelodge ) and Vianaio ( Vinai ). In addition, there are the corresponding small hamlet Chiassis di sopra, Chiassis di sotto, Sot Crez, Isimidi, Chiauians, Port Real, Plugna, Runchia, Fuessa, Uerpa, Vas, Pesmolet, Val di Lauco, Chiamp and Trischiamp.

Watercourses

The gorge of Vinadia is a 200 meters deep and in places only a few meters wide gorge, the result of the erosion of three mountain streams Chiantone, Pichon and Vinadia is.

History

The name Lauco is first mentioned in 914. It is derived from the Celtic leucos for dazzling white or off. Excavations indicate a settlement already in pre-Roman times. In the Middle Ages, the area belonged to the rule of the Patriarch of Aquileia. Around 1420, it falls to the Republic of Venice, and in 1797 to Austria - Hungary. Since 1866 it belongs to Italy.

Demographics

The decline of the population (1911: 3154 inhabitants in 1951: 2529 inhabitants, 2001: 877 inhabitants) is not least due to the poor economic situation of the community.

Events

  • Tir of cidules - translated the union of so-called cidules that are burning wheels made of beech wood - is certainly the most commonly practiced ritual and probably originates from the Celts, who worshiped fire as a deity.
  • In the district Vinaio visitors can participate in a passion play on Good Friday, will be staged in the streets of the village in the Passion of Christ.
  • On 1 May, a popular gathering place on the wide meadows of Porteal.
  • In June Avaglio is celebrated the feast of "standard" in the district, a rite of passage for the young villagers who are of age.
  • In the hamlet Uerpa the folk festival " Fieste dal Pastor " will be held in late summer, when it's all about the milk products in the region.
  • On Christmas Eve, residents of the different districts of the municipality in Lauco come to Torchlight " dai Madin " together where they spend the hours before the Christmas Mass with mulled wine and local specialties.
