Launt Thompson

Launt Thompson ( born February 8, 1833 in Ireland; † 26 September 1894 in Middletown, New York ) was a British- American sculptor.

Life

In 1847 Launt Thompson emigrated with his widowed mother to the United States and settled in Albany. Here he first studied medicine and was also engaged in painting. Then he devoted himself to sculpture under Erastus Dow Palmer (1817-1904), in whose studio he worked for nine years. Shortly thereafter, he went to New York City and opened his own studio in 1858. Between 1868 and 1869 he visited Italy and spent several months living in Rome to study the old masters. After his return Launt Thompson married in Pennsylvania Maria Louisa Potter, daughter of the Bishop of Pennsylvania Alonzo Potter and his wife, Mary Nott. In the years 1875-1887 he lived in Florence.
