Laurel County, Kentucky

Laurel County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is London. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located southeast of the geographic center of Kentucky, is in the south about 40 miles from Tennessee, located in the southeast about 60 miles from Virginia and has an area of 1149 square kilometers, of which 21 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Jackson County, Clay County, Knox County, Whitley County, McCreary County, Pulaski County and Rockcastle County.

History

Laurel County was formed on December 12, 1825 from parts of Clay County, Knox County, Rockcastle County and Whitley County. It was named after the Laurel River. At Wildcat Mountain fought on 21 October 1861 during the Civil War, about 7,000 men in a battle that could decide the Union troops for itself.
