Laurel is a city of Jones County in the U.S. state of Mississippi.

Geography

Laurel is located at 31 ° 41'51 " north latitude and 89 ° 8'22 " west longitude. The nearest big cities are Jackson (120 kilometers north-west ) and New Orleans (200 kilometers south-west ). The Interstate Highway 59 runs through the city.

History

Laurel was founded in 1882. Due to the forest wealth in the area soon developed a strong timber industry. After the New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad railway line was built, took over the following years, several sawmills to operate on. Because of the pure yellow color of the wood of conifers processed products were in great demand. The early 1900s, Laurel was a world leader in the supply of those products.
