Laurier LaPierre

Laurier LaPierre ( born November 21, 1929 in Lac- Mégantic, † 17 December 2012) was a Canadian politician of the Liberal Party of Canada, author and television presenter.

Life

LaPierre studied history at the University of Toronto. He hosted jointly with Patrick Watson, the Canadian TV show This Hour Has Seven Days in the 1960s. After the end of the TV show, he joined the Canadian Party New Democratic Party as a candidate in the parliamentary elections in 1968, in which he lost. In the following decades he worked again on Canadian television and wrote as an author of several books. For various newspapers such as The Financial Post, International Review, Canadian Forum and Encyclopædia Britannica article he wrote. In the 1980s he had his coming-out. He was committed to the Canadian LGBT organization SHELVES Canada. In June 2001, he was appointed as a Senator for the Canadian Senate, where he served until November 2004, when he reached the age limit of 75 years.
