Lauriidae

Genabelte dolls screw ( Lauria cylindracea )

The Lauriidae [ Note 1 ] is a worm family from the suborder of terrestrial snails ( gastropod ). The family includes about 50 species that are native to the Mediterranean region, in south-eastern Europe, Asia Minor, the Black Sea region and the Middle Atlantic Islands.

Features

The housing is cylindrical to oval. Most of them are small forms. The post-embryonic turns are usually radially ribbed. The mouth of the last turn usually rises to from the turns. The upper edge of the mouth is often almost straight but not parallel to the suture. In the mouth usually extend into two to seven teeth; the forms are rarely without teeth. In the genital apparatus penis with epiphallus and caecum ( cecum ) are present. The inner walls of the penis are provided with coarsely spirally arranged folds. The prostate gland has only a few acini; it sits on the base of the gland albumin. A penialer appendix is present. The Penisretraktor is branched. The stem of the spermathecae has no glands; Diverticulum usually missing.

Geographical distribution and behavior

The family is widespread in the Mediterranean area, in south-eastern Europe, in Asia Minor, the Crimea, the Caucasus region and the mid-Atlantic islands (Madeira, Azores and Canary Islands). Individual species have since been deported to other regions, such as to North America (British Columbia) and New Zealand. The animals live in forests and meadows, especially under stones and stone walls in dry, but also more humid habitats with moss and fall foliage.

System

The Lauriidae family is understood by Bouchet & Rocroi (2005) as a separate family within the superfamily Pupilloidea. In contrast, interpreted Schileyko (1998) the taxon as a subfamily of Orculidae.
