Lauterbacher Tropfen

Lauterbach is a drop of bitters, which is in the Erzgebirge Lauterbach, a district of Marienberg, produced and bottled. It is known the bitters for its spicy flavor and the dark green color; the recipe is a trade secret. According to company giving the spirit drink is unsweetened.

The bitters contains 40 % alcohol by volume. It is drunk well chilled. The herbal extract obtained by maceration and distillation.

History and production

The origins of the stomach bitters lead to Friedrich August hunger, blacksmith called Fritz August back, a well-known herb in the Erzgebirge man who was even called to cure all sorts of ailments to the Saxon court. The recipe for the Lauterbach droplet was first used by Fritz Schmied grandson of Augustus, founder Ernst Friedrich Ullmann junior commercially.

The Lauterbach drops are manufactured and sold by the company Ernst F. Ullmann, headquartered in Lauterbach / Erzgebirge. The manufacturing company founded in 1899, in 1910 the production of spirits started in the family business.

Now the company is led by the fourth generation of Kathleen Ullman Sieber. The small business currently has 13 employees. In addition to the Lauterbach drop 22 more varieties are produced according to their own traditional recipes; great fame also has the Vuglbeerschnaps.

Period 1945-1989

Due to less resource allocation by the state, the demand could be met only to a small extent. It was therefore decided to sell a maximum of 0.7 - liter bottle or two 0.35 -liter bottles per day per customer. The sell of the product was not uncommon. Therefore, developed in the Erzgebirge region of Lauterbach to a second currency and the coveted barter.

Despite these difficulties and the harassment and threat by authorities of the operation always remained the property of the family. After 1989, an offer to purchase a competitor was rejected.
