Lauwers

River course

The source of the Lauwers is located near the village Surhuisterveen ( Frisian: Surhústerfean ) in the Dutch province of Friesland. After a few kilometers, she meets east on the border between the provinces of Friesland and Groningen and follow it to the north. In Gerkesklooster / Stroobos the Lauwers crosses the Prinses Margriet Canal and the Van Starkenborghkanaal. Finally, it flows into the Bay of Lauwerszee and empties between the West Frisian Islands Schiermonnikoog and Rottumeroog / Rottumerplaat in the North Sea. The water channel between these islands can be viewed as an extension of Lauwers and bears the same name.

Historical Significance

The Lauwers is considered historical border between the western and eastern Friesland. Thus, the so-called westlauwerschen and ostlauwerschen Friesland regions are mentioned in the 8th century by the Lex Frisionum. Even today, the Lauwers separates the current Dutch province of Friesland ( not to be confused with the historical Friesland) of the province of Groningen. The self-designation of the Frisians of Friesland is today Westlauwers'sche Friesen.
