History

The village had as many Ligurian villages, formed in the days of the Roman Empire under the name Lavania. This name remained unchanged for several centuries until it finally transformed in Lavagna.

Lavagna, which according to local sources was a county of the Carolingians to 1198 is the stronghold of feudal Fieschi's been what has led to repeated clashes with the Republic of Genoa. From this village created the Fieschi, by means of their geographical and political sovereignty in their own realm in Liguria. During the Middle Ages it came increasingly to political disputes about the domain in the Levant and as the strongest opponent of the Fieschi soon became the Genoese Doria family. When the village was an autonomous commune in the 12th century, the Fieschi, however, retained the administrative and political power in their hands.

1564 the town was attacked and plundered by the Turkish pirate Dragut, as the surrounding communities had previously been plundered by the Saracens already. 1815, the church was transferred to the Kingdom of Sardinia, as it had been decided at the Congress of Vienna in 1814. In 1861 Lavagna was eventually incorporated into the united Kingdom of Italy.

Economy

The economy of the municipality is based on tourism, with an emphasis on beach holiday. The coastal district of Cavi di Lavagna experienced a high influx (also from the surrounding communities ) to bathers who come for one because of the large supply of ( paid ) beach facilities and secondly because of the excellent quality of the beaches.
