Protection

Thanks to a popular initiative, launched by the environmentalist Franz Weber, the Lavaux is protected by the Vaud constitution since 1977.

In December 2005, the Swiss Federal Office of Culture, Lavaux is nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The International Council on Monuments and Sites, a sub-organization of UNESCO, UNESCO recommended to the Committee in a report published in May 2007, the Lavaux be included in the list after in August 2006, a representative of the organization who visited the region. On 28 June 2007, recording under the name Lavaux terraces overlooking the lake and the Alps was decided.

Since his opinion is built in Lavaux too much and to contain another property speculation, Franz Weber collected signatures for a new popular initiative. The required number of signatures has been reached in July 2009, a new referendum is thus likely.
