Lavin

Lavin ( [ lɐvin ]? / I ) is a municipality in the district of Sur Tasna in the district of Inn in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland.

Geography

The town is located on a gravel terrace about 40 m on the left side above the Inn at the mouth of the Val Lavinuoz at the southeast foot of the Piz Linard ( 3411 m). Of the total municipality area of over 46 square kilometers are 2827 ha of unproductive area, mostly mountains. Though further 917 ha can be used for agricultural purposes, but are mostly mountain pastures. In addition to 29 ha settlement area includes the municipal area 845 ha covered by forests or woodlands.

Languages

In the 19th century there was a small German -speaking minority. Still used today, the vast majority of the population, the Grison Romanesque dialect Vallader than everyday language. Between 1880 and 1941 the Romansh-speaking population has remained stable (1880 83 % 1941 83%). In recent decades, this fell by only a few percentage points. The citizens of the town changed already in 1529 the Protestant doctrine.

From the end of 2010 220 inhabitants were 197 Swiss citizens.

The council consists of five members. The mayor is Linard Martinelli (2010 ).

Economy

Previously, the population of cattle, grain farming, timber exports and pay services lived. Today, agriculture is still important, however, a majority of the population works in the service sector.

Traffic

Lavin is on the railway tracks Scuol- Tarasp - Pontresina and Churchill - Scuol Scuol - the Rhaetian Railway and on the main road 27 from the Engadine to the border and on to Landeck in Tyrol.

History

In Las Muottas on the south side of the Inn Hans Conrad found in the years 1938/39, a settlement site where fragments of pottery and other finds from the Middle Bronze Age were unearthed. The area was already inhabited so early. The abandoned village of Gonda was first mentioned in 1160, the church today in the 13th century. The community was founded in 1499 and 1621/22 destroyed during the turmoil of Grisons by Austrian troops. In 1529, the municipality adopted the Reformation and bought in 1652 by the Austrian domination going on.

The village fire of 1869

At 14.30 clock of the 1st October 1869 broke out in the house of the Lureng Bisatz from a fire; today Bakery Giacometti. From the fierce wind -fed, came within an hour of the whole village north part of Lavinuoz creek on fire. Were spared only the church and two neighboring houses.

The inadequately equipped fire was able to fire the houses with flammable wood shingle roofs in the nested structure of the village from the 17th and 18th centuries not curb. 68 houses burned down completely, three elderly residents died in the fire; against 300 people were left homeless.

On 20 March 1870, the municipal assembly adopted the third version of a reconstruction plan. Instead of the 68 houses burnt should - mainly of Italian workers from Lombardy - only about half of Italian style to be rebuilt. The new building regulations given the current appearance of the new part of the village. Street widths from 4.5 to 5 meters, a minimum length of 6.2 meters and building regulations on fire walls, chimneys and roof coverings should prevent future Village fires.

For the first time in the Grisons were in Lavin flat " wood Cement Roofs" built, which takes about ten times less wood than the gable roofs covered with wooden shingles.
