Law Courts of Brussels

The Palace of Justice in Brussels (Dutch Justitiepaleis van Brussel, French Palais de Justice de Bruxelles) is the most important Court building in Belgium. The building was built in 1866-1883 by the architect Joseph Poelaert in the style of eclecticism. To the plans of the " ski even archi " ( Poelaert ) to realize the angry residents in 1867 had to vacate the district Bovendael. The Palace of Justice dominates the town not only because of its size but also because of its exposed position on the gallows at the transition from the upper to the lower town.

The floor area is 160 meters long and 150 meters wide, the dome 116 feet high, according to other sources 104 meters, or 142 feet high; the internal height of the dome hall ( Salle des pas perdus ) is 97.5 meters. The building contains eight yards, 27 courtrooms and 245 smaller rooms. It now houses the Supreme Court.
