Law enforcement in Malta

The Police Force of Malta is the Police of the Republic of Malta. To her currently includes 1732 police officers and 106 civilian employees. The tasks of the police are in the Penal Code ( Penal Code of Malta) and defined by the Police Act ( Maltese Law on the Police Force ). The police are responsible for public order and security on the main island and the islands of Gozo and Comino. The first police unit on the island was founded on July 12, 1814 by Sir Thomas Maitland, who later became governor of the island.

Organization

The Maltese Islands are divided into twelve police districts that are led by the office of the Divisional Police Force Units. In addition to the regional police forces, there is the Criminal Investigation Department ( Crime Investigation Department), which is responsible for capital crimes in the entire national territory. The regional police forces are supported further by a department for crime related to drugs (Drugs Squad ), a forensic laboratory ( Forensic Science Laboratory), a unit for tracking profile public offenses and Prosecution of Economic Criminal Matters ( Vice Squad and Economic Crimes Unit ) and a Security Service ( protective Services ) for the protection of high-ranking people and a special department (Special Branch). The cooperation with EUROPOL, INTERPOL and the Schengen Information System is coordinated by another department. Basic tasks, including personnel management, the Office of Strategy and Planning ( Strategy and Planning Office ), the Legal Department and the Finance Department (Finance Office ) are perceived.
