Law of Jante

The Jantegesetz ( norw / dän: .. Janteloven, schwed.: Jantelagen ) is a standard term for a Scandinavian patterns.

Developed it has the Danish- Norwegian author Aksel Sandemose (1899-1965) in his novel A refugee crosses his tracks (En flyktning krysser sitt spor ) from the year 1933. Sandemose grew up in the Danish Nykøbing, a place he in his novel called Jante. In his novel he portrays this little town at the beginning of the 20th century.

The term Janteloven or Jantelagen is common and ubiquitous in all Scandinavian countries. The Jantegesetz describes the cultural and political manners by which it is frowned upon to improve yourself or to present themselves as better and smarter than others.

A Jante is in Danish, a small coin, comparable with the term penny in German. The Jantegesetz is so to speak the "law of right and thinkers ."
