Lawndale is an American city in Los Angeles County in the U.S. state of California. It has about 32,700 inhabitants ( as of 2004). Lawndale is bordered to the west by Redondo Beach, in the north of Hawthorne, on the southeast by Torrance and at Alondra Park in the east. The metropolitan area has a size of 5.1 km ².

History

In 1905 the town was founded by Charles B. Hopper and named after a suburb of Chicago. The sale of land was slow at first, but in 1906 the first settlers arrived in the village. By 1910 the number of inhabitants, of whom most farmers rose to 142

The 20s were dominated by petroleum extraction. Driven by speculators and workers of the oil industry, land prices rose sharply, but fell after the delivery rates in 1929 fell again also again. After the Second World War, the demand for housing by immigrants and veterans back on and Lawndale was a pure residential area. Many of the residents were commuters who worked in other places. On December 28, 1959, the residents voted for the official founding of a new city in Los Angeles County, in order to avoid the incorporation of one of the surrounding towns.

In the 80s, many young people came to Lawndale who like wanted to stay near the beach, but it could not afford them, and went up in less attractive inland cities. The Urban Renewal Project was finished in 2003, however, they tried to attract through embellishments along Hawthorne Boulevard, the main thoroughfare of the city, more residents and tourists alike.

2004 an electronic advertising sign was grown. It created an income of about U.S. $ 200,000 annually.
