Lawrence Alma-Tadema

Sir Lawrence Alma- Tadema, OM, RA (birth name: Lourens Alma Tadema, born January 8, 1836 in Dronrijp, Netherlands, † June 25, 1912 in Wiesbaden ) was a Dutch painter and draftsman of academic realism with British, Belgian and Dutch citizenship.

Life

Alma- Tadema was the son of the lawyer Pieter Tadema and his second wife Hinke Dirks Brouwer ( the half-sister of his first wife ). Alma- Tadema's father died in 1840 and he got a guardian. At age 16, Alma -Tadema came to Antwerp in 1852 and has been at the Academy of Fine Arts student of Gustave Wappers.

With whose intercession he could change later in the studio of Henri Leys and became his assistant. 1859 Alma-Tadema assisted Leys in the decoration of the Town Hall of Antwerp. The next few years had already Alma-Tadema as an independent artist, but was again encountered as a student in the studios of Josephus Laurentius Dyckmans or Gustave Wappers.

1863 married Alma -Tadema in Antwerp Gressin Pauline, a French woman, and lived with her ​​until her death in 1869 in Brussels. 1864 a picture of him was awarded a medal at the exhibition of the Paris Salon in 1864. At the World Exhibition in Paris in 1867 his exhibited works were also awarded.

With his two daughters, Laurence and Anna Alma -Tadema was in 1870 settled in London and devoted himself in the following years of history painting, in which he found his subjects again and again in ancient times.

1871 married Alma -Tadema Laura Theresa Epps in London, who came from a family of artists, and also made ​​a name under the name Laura Theresa Alma- Tadema. Queen Victoria, the Alma- Tadema very appreciated, awarded him in 1873 the right of permanent residence ( denization ) because it would not otherwise be allowed him as a foreigner to become a member of the Royal Academy of Arts.

In 1876 the Royal Academy of Arts Alma- Tadema as " Associate", and three years later they appointed him as a full member. The prestigious Grosvenor Gallery in London honored him in a well-received exhibition. To mark the 81st birthday of Queen Victoria in 1899, Alma -Tadema was knighted.

At the age of 76 years Sir Lawrence Alma -Tadema died on 25 June 1912 in Wiesbaden, and was buried in St. Paul 's Cathedral in London.
