Lawrence C. Phipps

Lawrence Cowle Phipps ( born August 30, 1862 in Amityville, Berks County, Pennsylvania, † March 1, 1958 in Santa Monica, California ) was an American politician ( Republican), who represented the state of Colorado in the U.S. Senate.

Life

He grew up in Pittsburgh, where he worked at the Carnegie Steel Company as a clerk. His uncle Henry Phipps was the second largest shareholder of the company. He eventually became its vice president. He left the company in 1901 and moved to Denver, where he was active as an investor and was elected president of the Colorado Taxpayers 's Protective League in 1913 (similar to the Federation of Taxpayers ).

In 1918, Phipps defeated in elections to the Senate of the United States, the Democratic incumbent John F. Shafroth. In 1920, he acted as a delegate to the Republican National Convention Colorado. Phipps was re-elected in 1924 with the catchy slogan " A vote for Lawrence C. Phipps is another vote for Coolidge ." He stood from 1924 to 1926 before the United States Senate Committee on Education and Labor. In 1930, he did not present himself for re-election.

Between 1931 and 1933 built Senator Phipps and his third wife Margaret Phipps Estate to create jobs during the Great Depression. Margaret Phipps donated in 1964 the villa and grounds of the University of Denver. Today, they are respectively the Margaret Rogers Phipps House and the Lawrence C. Phipps Memorial Conference Center.
