Lawrence County (Illinois)

The Lawrence County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the County had 16,833 inhabitants and a population density of 17.5 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Lawrenceville.

Geography

The County is located in southeastern Illinois on the Wabash River, which forms the border with Indiana. It has an area of 968 square kilometers, of which five square miles are water. At the Lawrence County borders the following Nachbarcountys:

History

Lawrence County was formed on January 16, 1821 from parts of Edwards County and Crawford County. It was named after Captain James Lawrence, who with the saying: was the British -American War of 1812, after he had been mortally wounded, known as " Do not give up the ship ."

The Wabash River was at the end of the 17th century and until the mid-18th century, a popular route to the French from Canada to the Mississippi River and next to go to the Gulf of Mexico. The French secured this route by various military posts. In the Treaty of Paris in 1783, the territory fell to the British.

On February 18, 1779 George Roger Clark and his soldiers crossed the territory of the later Lawrence County, crossed the Wabash River at St. Francisville and captured on February 25, 1779 Fort Vincennes. After the war of 1812 came other settlers from Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. In the following years, a ferry across the Wabash River was built at approximately the site of today's Lincoln River Bridge.

In March 1830, the then 21 -year-old future president Abraham Lincoln crossed with the entire family pulled by oxen carts the Wabash River. Later, as a prosecutor, he visited more often in the County.

The median income for a household was $ 38,326. The per capita income was $ 17,050. 16.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
