Lawrence County (Indiana)

Lawrence County is a county located in the U.S. state of Indiana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Bedford.

Geography

The County is located in south-central Indiana and has an area of ​​1171 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Monroe County, Jackson County, Washington County, Orange County, Martin County and Greene County.

History

Lawrence County was formed on January 7, 1818 from parts of Orange County. It was named after Captain James Lawrence, who with the saying: was the British -American War of 1812, after he had been mortally wounded, known as " Do not give up the ship ."

Because of the many limestone finds the Bewölkerung grew in the early years of colonization rapidly and the County and the City of Bedford has been colloquially named " The Limestone Capital of the World".
