Lawrence County (Kentucky)

Lawrence County is a county located in the state of Kentucky in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Louisa. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Geography

The County is located in northeastern Kentucky, on the border with West Virginia and has an area of ​​1088 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface. It borders in Kentucky clockwise to the following counties: Carter County, Boyd County, Martin County, Johnson County, Morgan County and Elliott County.

History

Lawrence County was formed on December 14, 1821 from parts of Floyd County and Greenup County. It was named after Captain James Lawrence, who with the saying: was the British -American War of 1812, after he had been mortally wounded, known as " Do not give up the ship ."
