Life

The son of British colonials Louisa and Lawrence Samuel Durrell spent his early years in India. At age eleven, he was sent to school to Canterbury (England), where, however, he never felt at home. He left the university without a degree, because it aspired to the career of the writer.

On January 22, 1935 Durrell married Nancy Isobel Myers, his first wife. In March, he moved to stays in Paris and Athens with mother, wife and siblings including brother Gerald to Corfu. At this time also began his lifelong friendship with fellow writer Henry Miller. In the same year he published his first novel, Pied Piper of Lovers.

1941 had to leave because of the approaching German army Durrell Greece. Durrell moved to Cairo. As a result, Durrell lived in Alexandria, after the end of World War II in Rhodes, 1947/48 in Argentina, from 1949 to 1952 in Belgrade. He worked in various positions, mostly as a press attaché for the British government.

In 1952 Durrell moved to Cyprus, where he first gave English lessons and later in turn worked for the British government in Nicosia. His experiences from the time of violent clashes between Turkish and Greek Cypriots he worked in the book Bitter Lemons (published 1957).

Even during the time in Cyprus Durrell began to work on the Alexandria Quartet, which was published 1957-1960. These four books brought a Durrell international recognition.

As Durrell had to leave Cyprus, he settled in southern France, where he was to spend the rest of his life. Durrell was married four times and had two daughters.

Durrell has been repeatedly proposed for the Nobel Prize. His dramas Sappho and Actis were first performed in Germany by Gustaf, An Irish Faust by Oscar Fritz Schuh at the Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg.

After him the asteroid Durrell has been named.
