Lawrence Johnson (athlete)

Lawrence Johnson ( born May 7, 1974 in Norfolk ( Virginia) ) is a retired American pole vaulter.

At the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, he finished eighth. He celebrated his biggest success by winning the silver medal at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney behind his compatriot Nick Hysong. A total of four athletes had a height of 5.90 m skipped, so the number of failed attempts decided on the medals. The Russian Maxim Tarasov won the bronze medal and the German Michael Stolle landed in fourth place.

2001 Johnson won at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Lisbon with a height of 5.95 m the gold medal, after he had already occupied the second place in 1997 in Paris.

He was also seven American champion in the high jump, four times outdoors (1996-1997, 2000-2001) and three times in the Hall (1997, 2000-2001).

Lawrence Johnson had a competition weight of 86 kg at a height of 1.85 m. After his retirement, he began working as a pole vault coach.
