Lawrence M. Judd

Lawrence McCully Judd ( born March 20, 1887 in Honolulu, Hawaii, † October 4, 1968 ibid ) was the seventh Territorial Governor of Hawaii and held this office from 1929 to 1934 held. March 4, 1953 to October 1 of the same year Judd was Governor of American Samoa.

Judd was best known for his pardon, or conversion of a conviction against Grace Hubbard Fortescue, who was sentenced by the Court of Hawaii due to the manslaughter of Joseph Kahahawai, in connection with the Massie affair so-called, to ten years in captivity. Instead, he ordered a one-hour stay in his office. The daughter of Fortescue, Thalia Fortescue Massie, had previously accused several locals and Japanese- inhabitants of the rape. Since each of the accused could not have committed the crime, they had dropped their case to the dismay of her father.
