Lawrence is a city on the Merrimack River in Essex County in the U.S. state of Massachusetts in the United States. 2010, the population was 76 377 people.

History

Lawrence was founded in 1840 and is considered the first planned industrial city in the United States. 1847 she was awarded the status as Town and 1853 as City. She was an important location for the textile industry, which produced both the American and the European market here. At the beginning of the twentieth century with almost 95,000 inhabitants, Lawrence was a leader in the manufacture of cotton and woolen textiles. Of great importance here played the operated by the water power of the Merrimack Rivers factories. The ESSEX Company under the direction of Abbot Lawrence left the river with the Great Stone Dam dam. The emigration from 1920 was mainly due to the weak economic situation of the city at that time, in 1912 it came to the so-called 1912 Lawrence Textile Strike.

Traffic

Lawrence is located off Interstate 495, the city is also crossed by the Massachusetts Route 28 from south to north. The Massachusetts Route 110 runs east to west in the northern part of Lawrence.
