Lawrence Picachy

Trevor Lawrence Cardinal Picachy SJ ( born August 7, 1916 in Darjeeling, India, † November 29, 1992 in Calcutta) was Archbishop of Calcutta.

Life

Trevor Lawrence Picachy entered the Jesuit order in 1934 and studied in different houses Catholic theology. He received on 21 November 1947, the sacrament of Holy Orders, and then worked as a parish pastor. From 1950 he worked in Calcutta as a lecturer and seminar leader in the training of young priests.

Pope John XXIII. appointed him in 1962 as Bishop of Jamshedpur. Trevor Lawrence Picachy participated in the years 1962-1965 at the Second Vatican Council. Pope Paul VI. conferred on him in 1969 the management of the Archdiocese of Calcutta and took him in 1976 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Sacro Cuore di Maria Immacolato ai Parioli in the College of Cardinals to. Trevor Lawrence Picachy resigned the leadership of the Archdiocese of Calcutta in 1986 due to illness. He died on November 29, 1992 in Calcutta, and was buried on the grounds of his order in Thakurpukur.
