Lawrence Shehan

Lawrence Joseph Cardinal Shehan ( born March 18, 1898 in Baltimore, Maryland, USA; † August 26, 1984 ibid ) was Archbishop of Baltimore.

Life

Lawrence Shehan studied at Saint Charles College in Ellicott City, Maryland, at Saint Mary 's Seminary in Baltimore and at the Pontifical Athaneum " De Propaganda Fide " in Rome, the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology. He received on 23 December 1922, the sacrament of Holy Orders, and then worked as a pastor in various parishes of the dioceses of Baltimore and Washington, DC. Moreover, he was from 1929 to 1936 Deputy Director and from 1936 to 1945 director of the Catholic Charities of the United States. Pope Pius XII. 1945 appointed him titular bishop of Lydda and Auxiliary Bishop of Baltimore. The Bishop Lawrence Shehan ordained on December 12, 1945 the Apostolic Delegate in the United States, Amleto Giovanni Cicognani.

1953 Lawrence Shehan Bishop of Bridgeport. On July 10, 1961, he was named by Pope John XXIII. Titular Archbishop of Nicopolis ad Nestum and Koadjutorerzbischof of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Lawrence Shehan was born on 8 December of the same year, Archbishop of Baltimore. He participated in the years 1962-1965 at the Second Vatican Council. Pope Paul VI. took him on 22 February 1965 as cardinal priest with the titular church of San Clemente in the College of Cardinals, and entrusted him with the presidency of the Central Committee for International Eucharistic Congresses. The management of the Archdiocese of Baltimore put Lawrence Cardinal Shehan on April 2, 1974 down for reasons of age. He died on August 26, 1984 in Baltimore, and was buried in the local cathedral.
