Laws in Wales Acts 1535–1542

The laws on incorporation of Wales 1535-1542 (English Laws in Wales Acts 1535-1542, Welsh Y Deddfau Cyfreithiau yng Nghymru 1536 a 1543), often referred to as Act of Union, meant no association, but the inclusion of Wales in the area of justice of England. The laws were enacted during the reign of Henry VIII.

Wales was subdivided into 13 counties, namely

  • Monmouthshire (Sir Fynwy )
  • Glamorganshire ( or Forgannwg Sir Morgannwg )
  • Carmarthenshire (Sir Gaerfyrddin or Sir Gar )
  • Pembrokeshire (Sir Benfro )
  • Cardiganshire (Sir Aberteifi and Ceredigion )
  • Brecknockshire (Sir Frycheiniog )
  • Radnorshire (Sir Faesyfed )
  • Montgomeryshire (Sir Drefaldwyn )
  • Denbighshire (Sir Ddinbych ) 3
  • Flintshire (Sir y Fflint )
  • Merionethshire ( Meirionnydd Sir or Feirionnydd )
  • Caernarfonshire (Sir Gaernarfon )
  • Anglesey ( sir Fon )

English law was now in Wales. This meant, inter alia, that the English language was introduced as the official language. This kept most locals away from public office.

The regulations of 1535 were on 21 December 1993, which repealed by 1542 on January 3, 1995 and in order to restore a legal autonomy of Wales.
