Layered clothing

The onion skin principle, even onion or onion skin principle system, refers to a collection of clothes in several layers of clothes of different thickness and material are combined. The individual garments are similarly superposed attracted to the individual layers of an onion. The onion skin principle is used mainly in outdoor sports its application, but it may well be applied in everyday situations. The advantage of this principle is based, inter alia, wear to the fact that between the layers of clothing in total more air is stored as a thermal insulator, as in a few layers thicker garments. In addition, for example, moisture, vapor diffusion and UV protection and wind through the appropriate layers or material choice can be positively influenced.

The various layers

The different layers of clothing, and their functions from the inside to the outside:

Base layer and transport layer welding or Next -to -Skin

Insulation layer (s)

Weather protection and top layer or outer layer

Each drawing in an additional (onion ) layer brings out not only aided by folding air situation, but also a scale interruption of possible paths for capillary liquid water transport to the body.

In general, the onion skin principle, better several thin layers than one thick. The individual layers should be breathable so that the heat does not accumulate during physical activity on the body. Soft shell garments combine the insulation layer due to the weather protection.

Application of the onion skin principle

The main benefit of clothing after the onion skin principle is that the clothes can be easily adjusted by removing or adding individual layers to the current temperature and weather conditions. In physiologically favorable section and fit and ideal material choice of the individual layers of the weld is also very well away from the body, while moisture is held in the vicinity of the body.

A disadvantage of this clothing principle is that you at very often and rapidly changing weather conditions, the individual layers always have to re- adjust to maintain optimum function of clothing.

For companies with inexperienced participants or unsafe weather conditions, it is recommended that you so einkleidet to the beginning that you do not freeze when resting. As soon as one moves and is warm ( after about 10-15 minutes ), a Rüstpause can be inserted, removed in excess garments from the insulation layer and so the heat balance is regulated. More experienced participants can leave at the beginning of these layers already.

During longer breaks (eg Gipfelrast ) should again attracted some more layers and optionally wet clothes are exchanged for dry ones.
