Lazareto (Ithaca)

Lazaretto (Greek Λαζαρέτο (n. sg. ), Also Nissaki tou Sotira Νησάκι του Σωτήρα, islets of the Savior ' ) is the name of a small, now uninhabited island in the bay of Vathy, the harbor of the Greek island of Ithaca Ithaca also mentioned.

The small, tree-covered island is located approximately 100 meters from the coast of the Bay. On it there is a built in 1668 chapel ( του Μεταμόρφωση Σωτήρα ) of the Transfiguration of the Saviour ' is dedicated, after which the island received its Greek name. Similar Lazzaretto Vecchio in the lagoon of Venice, the island served in the early modern period as a hospital and quarantine station for arrivals from overseas. In 1817 the British established on the island a two-story building from which is a bust of the then British High Commissioner Isar for the Ionian Islands, Sir Thomas Mati Lands obtained. The building initially served as a prison for exiles. Among the internees here there was the Greek revolutionary Odysseas Androutsos. 1912, the buildings were abandoned. In the summer of 2003 a theater performance on the islet was produced in April 2008, leaving the Greek Society for tourist development ( Εταιρεία Τουριστικής Ανάπτυξης ), which manages touristy usable state ownership, the land to the municipality of Ithaca with the duty to preserve and tourist exploitation of the island.
