Le Castellet (Var)

Le Castellet is a commune with 4022 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Var department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

Le Castellet is located in the southern foothills of the Massif de la Sainte -Baume on a wooded ridge above ordered with vineyards and olive groves, terraces. North of the village rises the 447 m high Roche Redonne.

Attractions

  • The old center Le Castellet Village, with its winding streets is on the apex of a hill. From there you can enjoy a nice view over the Massif de la Sainte -Baume to the north.
  • The Romanesque parish church dates from the 12th century. The ceiling of the nave is only slightly arched, the apse has a semi- spherical vault.
  • The church of Saint Sauveur des Templars, also dates from the 12th century: The apse was built on the remains of an old tower. In the church there are beautiful wood paneling.
  • The medieval castle in Castellet Village was built in the 12th century and rebuilt in the 15th century. It impresses with its facade, the portico and beautiful, wrought iron railings.

Twinning

The Municipality of Le Castellet has since 1978 partnered with Herrischried in Baden- Württemberg. Since 1989, the partnership with Or Akiva is cultivated in Israel.

Economy

In the south of Le Castellet in the Val d' Aren ( Sandtal ) located quarry, which extends for several kilometers across the territory of three municipalities Le Castellet, Bandol and Le Évenos is recovered sand.

Vineyards, olive trees and vegetable plantations characterize the agricultural areas of the municipality. Some wines are among the AOCs, Bandol and Côtes de Provence.
