The Cat ( Le chat ) is a French-Italian movie from the year 1971. It is based on the novel by Georges Simenon The cat.

Action

At the center of the story is an old married couple, which leads a desolate marriage: the former artist Clémence Bouin, the lags since an accident in the ring, and the former printer Julien Bouin. They live in a dilapidated neighborhood, to be created in the way for new buildings. Also, the house in which they live, shall yield to surrounding construction site, the land is expropriated. He is apathetic and feels just a little for his cat; his wife is indifferent to him after 20 years of marriage. You on the other hand tries to awaken him with their torments from lethargy, and engages to ever more drastic means. First, it sets in a supermarket from the cat, but the back is the way home. Finally, the woman shoots the cat, after which the man wants to leave his wife. But she can not live without him; he comes back, but does not speak a word to her. From then on, the two communicate only over small notepad. The man extends her in the end a piece of paper out " Le chat " ("The Cat" ). Then the woman suffers a heart attack. When the man briefly represents the legs and go from the street sees the light ( the woman breaks down and breaks the floor lamp with order ), he goes back and already suspects evil. As she dies, the man breaks the language barrier and he mourns but around them. Shortly thereafter, he takes a larger amount tablets and sinks on the chair next to his late wife. He died soon afterwards in hospital.

Criticism

Filmdienst: The state description of a disintegrating marriage is compared to symbolbefrachtet the demolition of a residential district. Well played, but too emotional; a film that evokes pity rather than to provoke reflection.

Awards

Signoret and Gabin were honored for their acting performances at the Berlinale in 1971 with the Silver Bear; the director Pierre Granier - Deferre was nominated for the Golden Bear.
